Pokémon: Detective Pikachu Movie Review (NO SPOILERS)

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

Welcome to my first ever movie review! I am super excited to give my input (no spoilers) on a movie that brings life back to my childhood imagination. This is bringing life to what I grew up with in the world of Pokémon in a live action take, so let’s dive in.

Detective Pikachu follows a young man named Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) and an unexpected partner in Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) on a journey to uncover the truth of what happened to Tim’s father and other devious plans occurring in Ryme City. Throughout this journey, as viewers, we get to experience this world that has been adopted to allow Pokémon and humans to live side by side. Along the journey, Tim and Pikachu visit Pokémon and humans alike to discover answer to the whereabouts of his father and a diabolical plot to change the world.

The scenery and CGI of the Pokémon are very good and deliver a warm feeling of being dropped into a world that many fans have only dreamed of since they were children (or adults, no judgement here). The way Pikachu moves throughout the movie and the design of the character looks similar to the original model we saw when the Pokémon series first began in the anime. In other words, it’s the fat Pikachu that has been lost to time due to the constant edit of the Pokémon Company mascot.

Justice Smith’s performance was satisfactory in this film. I found myself getting connected to his story throughout the movie, but the actor’s movements and facial expressions seemed rigid and forced at times. It seemed to me that Smith miss some of the beats in the movie that could have been better capitalized upon. Overall, Smith was fine for this pairing, as Ryan Reynolds was able to shoulder the story when Smith was not able to hit his beats.

Ryan Reynolds breathes life into his character by relying on what we all have liked about his performances in the past. His comedy is his own, and this movie capitalizes on what has made previous characters successful for him such as Deadpool and Van Wilder. Reynolds gives great comic relief throughout the movie and humor that children and adults will find enjoyable.

Detective Pikachu brings nostalgia to those that loved and grew up with Pokémon. It has delivered on the hope that video game adapted movies can make it on the big screen without always looking and feeling misplaced. I would recommend this movie to anyone who has enjoyed Ryan Reynolds acting/humor in the past, has enjoyed the Pokémon world, or is just looking for something new and visually stimulating. I would describe this in one line as a buddy cop movie that is enjoyable for the whole family.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is in theaters now.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 7/10

I would watch Detective Pikachu again and recommend to see it in theaters.
